Alexandre Frazão

Born in Rio de Janeiro, but living in Portugal since 1987, Alexandre Frazão is a very requested drummer because of his hability to adapt to different contexts.

With a very elastic conception of rhythm and texture – after all, he studied with Alan Dawson, Kenny Washington and Max Roach –, he’s invited to play and record even by the pop / rock biggest names in Portugal, like Rui Veloso and Pedro Abrunhosa, and we can find him either in traditional / world music situations (with Rão Kyao and Júlio Pereira, for instance) or in free improvised / experimental ones (with Nuno Rebelo).

Fundamental in his musical life was the Porto concert by the great tenor player Von Freeman in which he shined with his busy sticks, keeping things going at a highest level. But he’s not turned only to one time events, even if so fulfiling as this one with the master saxophonist from Chicago: Frazão is the soul and the motor of the TGB project with Mário Delgado and Sérgio Carolino, a bizarre trio of tuba, guitar and drums that reminds us the brassy sounds of New Orleans and apply the cubist conceptions of jazz proposed by Thelonious Monk and Eric Dolphy, sometimes even interpreting their scores.

With this group he intends to turn real his many ideas about jazz in this beginning of the 21st century. Let’s see what happens next...
