Carlos Barretto’s Lokomotiv is back with a new CD, “Labirintos” (“Labyrinths”), with new repertoire, with music of breath and substance. The compositions are again by the bassist that, with Carlos Bica and Zé Eduardo, brought to light, in Portugal, the larger (and lowest in timbre) instrument of the violin family. Seven years after the previous release of the band (“Lokomotiv”, with François Corneloup as special guest), Barretto shows himself on the top of his game, either in use of his working tool or writing scores distinguished by the modernity of forms and purpose to give the best motives and references to improvisation. With him are two other of the most recognized musicians in the Portuguese scene, also with a strong background in areas like world music and rock, guitarist Mário Delgado and drummer / percussionist José Salgueiro. Intensity and drive co-exist with a deep lyrical focus, sustaining a music which is simultaneously universal and local, expanding the frontiers of the jazz language but never forgetting the tradition. As Barretto himself says, with partners like these, he “can experiment everything, without limits, creating an unique sound of great cohesion and beauty, deriving from complicity and openness”. The plural directions taken by the songs and the diversified influences emerging explain the title chosen for the record and what happens on stage – hearing Lokomotiv is really like walking on a gigantic labyrinth.
