“Mt. Meru” is the second record under his own name by the guitarist of The Rite of Trio – one of the most brilliant projects coming from the small European country called Portugal. After his first record, The Guit Kune Do, which consisted of five electric guitars, he shuffles things around once again and presents us with a chamber music feeling, comprising instruments like cello, bassoon, bass clarinet and vibraphone and putting them side by side with his electric guitar, alto saxophone, double bass and drums. André B. Silva continues to devour different music genres and styles into a post-modernist jazz philosophy of his own, “defying art authority and cannons of what art should feel like”. Novelty and unpredictability are assumed goals and nothing is put aside, be it Silva’s love for melody, his vicious devotion for counterpoint or his punk-ish understanding of contemporary classical music and straight-ahead hard bop. One more step for his “eternal search for sounds, formations and solutions less explored” and one more challenge for us, listeners.
