Bruno Parrinha VINE LEAF
Bruno Parrinha alto saxophone | Luís Lopes electric guitar | João Valinho drums

Assuming the leadership of the band, Bruno Parrinha named this trio after the translation of his name to English (Parrinha in English: VINE LEAF).The partnership with guitarist Luís Lopes was already being worked on in the “Garden” trio (also released by Clean Feed) exploring in depth the personal aesthetics of each instrumentalist with a possible greater approximation to total freedom, free from any influence. This time with drummer João Valinho instead of Ricardo Jacinto on cello, the work continues in the same direction, taking into account the difference in timbre and rhythmic approach. In this new context, the premise consists of a narrative, composed in real time, based on the duality of lyrical and prosaic discourse. Without premeditation, beyond a vague declaration of initial intention, the music reveals itself with the suggestions of the three musicians carried away by emotion and echoic memory. TALES OF THE SENSES are episodes sung in troubadour style, improvisations of a fictional, lyrical reality, focused on details that are positioned between figuration and abstraction, all based on the senses. Stories that evolve from the body of the path, in the beauty of the words that come together to express the experience of the search for the object of the end for which they are intended.
Influenced by his father, an architect, musician and painter, and his drummer brother, saxophonist and clarinetist Bruno Parrinha has been working and developing his own language. He studied at the Academia de Amadores de Música. In 1988 he worked with Sei Miguel on the LP “Songs against love and terrorism”. Since then he has dedicated himself to free improvisation, or composition in real time, participating in numerous concerts, including formations with dancers in synergies of spontaneous composition and structured improvisations with musicians such as Rodrigo Amado, Rodrigo Pinheiro, Miguel Mira, João Lucas, Paulo Curado, Ernesto Rodrigues, Nuno Rebelo, Gabriel Ferrandini, Hernâni Faustino, Carlos Zíngaro, Luís Vicente, João Lencastre and many others.
Luís Lopes is a musician connected to Jazz, full improvisation, experimental and noise music, and he leads several groups that soon positioned him in the international scene: Humanization 4tet (with Rodrigo Amado and Texans Stefan and Aaron Gonzalez), Lisbon Berlin Trio/Quartet (with Rodrigo Pinheiro and Germans Christian Lillinger, Robert Landfermann), Guillotine (with french cellist Valentin Ceccaldi and norwegian drummer Andreas Wildhagen), the newest 10 elements multi nationalities based in Lisbon Abyss Mirrors (witch he leads and produces); Valentin Ceccaldi’s BonBon Flamme (plus with Ethienne Ziemniak and Fulco Otterwanger). Still has his solo works, characterized by a full experimental attitude and can range from Noise to Pianissimo. Plus, he cherishes and privileges duo projects, examples are collaborations with Jean-Luc Guionnet, Fred Lonberg-holm, Jasper Stadhouders, Noel Akchoté and Julien Desprez.
Coming from the suburbs of Sintra, João Valinho began a career in music after completing his studies in Fine Arts, seeking to conceive it in his experimental practices, active in the dazzling panorama of Lisbon’s improvised music, from jazz to near-silence music, as well as in interdisciplinary approaches with dance and theater. Music combines activity in the production of artistic objects in installation and photography. He has had the opportunity to work, both in studio and live, with musicians of excellence like Yedo Gibson, Felipe Zenicola (the three of them have the outstanding trio MOVE), Rodrigo Amado Refraction Quartet, Fashion Eternal, Rodrigo Brandão Outros Espaço e Anthropic Neglect.
