After seven years without any record under his own name, Bernardo Sassetti returns with “Nocturno”, an exceptional CD recorded in the house of Maria João Pires, Quinta de Belgais, in one of the famous pianos of the renowned classical pianist. Featuring Carlos Barretto on double bass, and Alexandre Frazão on drums, “Nocturno” reflects the extraordinary atmosphere that was lived during the five-day recording session. This is an introspective and lyrical record that leaves behind Bernardo’s previous afro-Cuban adventures and places him as the excellent Jazz pianist he always was. “Nocturno” is made of intense atmospheres and colors and features nine original compositions signed by Sassetti, and two other belonging to the Catalan composer Federico Mompou. Bernardo Sassetti is, together with Mário Laginha, Carlos Barretto and Mário Delgado, one of the most important Portuguese Jazz musicians. Since the eighties, he is leaving a strong personal imprint in Portuguese Jazz, after being considered by many as one of the most promising young players in a new generation of local musicians – the first ones in Portugal to take Jazz as a professional career. Bernardo was born in Lisbon in June 1970. In this city, he pursued classical piano studies and only later he devoted himself to Jazz. He studied with Zé Eduardo, Horace Parlan and Sir Roland Hanna. He started his professional career in 1987, imposing himself as a key player in numerous jazz formations. The maturity and quality of his playing, showcased in the quartet of Carlos Martins and the Moreiras Jazztet when he was only eighteen years old, would never stop to grow. His resume includes collaborations with Andy Sheppard, Art Farmer, Kenny Wheeler, Freddie Hubbard, Paquito D´Rivera, Benny Golson, Curtis Fuller, Eddie Henderson, Charles McPherson, Steve Nelson, or still, his integration in the United Nations Orchestra and in the quintet of Guy Barker – With whom he recorded the CD Into The Blue (Verve), nominated for the Mercury Awards ’95 – Ten albums of the year. This same quintet recorded the CD What Love Is (Emarcy/Universal, 1998) with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the singer Sting. Recently, he formed a duo with pianist Mário Laginha. In his recordings as a leader, Salsetti, from 1994, and Mundos,1996, as well as in his Suites Ecos de Africa, Sons do Brasil and Suite Ibérica, Sassetti shows incredible talent as a composer. The cinema has been one other area where Sassetti’s work as a composer has been most visible. His most important project was the participation in the movie “The Talented Mr. Ripley” from Anthony Minguella, to whom he recorded “My Funny Valentine” with Matt Damon, “Tu Vuo’ Fa L’Americano” with Matt Damon, Jude Law and Fiorello, and “You Don´t Know What Love Is” with the Scottish singer John Martyn. He also wrote, together with the trumpeter Guy Barker, a series of compositions to be premiered at the world openings of this movie – held in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Berlin, Paris, London and Rome.
