The core distinction between American and European improvisation lies in their relationship to pre-existing musical syntax:
Idiomatic Improvisation (American Matrix): American free jazz, even while breaking away from functional harmony and strict meter, remained deeply rooted in a specific idiom—the blues tradition, swing pulse, continuous rhythmic drive, and vocalized instrumental phrasing.
Non-Idiomatic Free Improvisation (European School): Conceptualized by Derek Bailey and championed by figures like Evan Parker and Peter Brötzmann, European improvisation sought to detach itself from established genres. It rejected jazz conventions in favor of “instant composition”—focusing on timbral exploration, extended techniques, microtonality, silence, and abstract sound structures drawn as much from European contemporary classical music as from jazz.
The Role of Clean Feed Records
Founded in Lisbon in 2001, Clean Feed Records became a vital catalyst for sustaining and expanding this non-idiomatic paradigm in the 21st century:
Global Documentation: At a time when mainstream labels abandoned experimental music, Clean Feed extensively cataloged the work of both legendary pioneers and emerging practitioners of non-idiomatic free improvisation.
Transatlantic Bridge: Clean Feed softened the rigid ideological divide between these approaches. By facilitating cross-pollination between European non-idiomatic improvisers and American avant-garde musicians, the label reframed free improvisation not as a historical debate, but as an evolving, unified global vocabulary.
After nearly a year of suspended shipments, we’re finally able to ship to the United States again.
Please note, however, that deliveries to the US will require longer transit times, expect a minimum delivery time of three weeks, and depending on order volume, processing times may also be longer than usual.
Unfortunately, these new requirements also mean higher shipping costs. We are now responsible for customs clearance fees on our end, and these charges will be included in your order total.
While the process is more complex than before, we’re very happy to be able to send our music to the United States again and make it available to all of you.
Thank you for standing by us over the past year. Your continued encouragement has meant a great deal to us, and we are grateful to have you with us as we resume shipping to the US.
Clean Feed Records Announces First Posthumous Album
by Visionary Trumpeter Sei Miguel: Viva!
O Carro de Fogo de Sei Miguel
Clean Feed Records is deeply honored to announce the release of VIVA! O Carro de Fogo de Sei Miguel, a double CD capturing the final, unreleased chapter of one of contemporary jazz’s most radical and poetic minds.
This landmark release marks the first posthumous album by the legendary trumpeter, arranger, and bandleader Sei Miguel (1961–2025), who passed away in November 2025.
It also serves as the historic final release for Clean Feed Records, closing a monumental 25-year legacy (2001–2026) of documenting groundbreaking avant-garde music.
While Viva! O Carro de Fogo de Sei Miguel is the first posthumous record to surface since the maestro’s passing, it is a treasure trove that listeners can only hope will not be the last. It stands as a vibrant, defiant celebration of life, sound, and the enduring flame of an irreplaceable artist.
